Windows dominates 72% of desktops, yet WSL is a major blind spot. WSL2 runs on 16.8% of developer systems, but EDRs lack visibility. Our research shows WSL enables Hyper-V–like evasion without admin rights on existing systems. We present novel WSL-origin attacks: BYOVD kernel crashes, registry manipulation without Windows binaries, and weaponized WSL ransomware evading major EDRs, with a full attack chain, MITRE mapping, detections, and mitigations.
